Line Voltage Regulator

A line voltage regulator is pretty much like an AC automatic voltage regulator.  A line voltage regulator will provide a constant output of voltage regardless of what the fluctuations of input voltage is.

The line voltage regulator was designed to protect computers, audio components, video and other types of electronic equipment from problems that can occur by AC line voltage irregularities.  The line voltage irregularities can involve brownouts, sag of voltages, or over voltages.  These type of problems can cause sensitive equipment to either malfunction or become extremely damaged.

The line voltage regulator works with single phase AC voltages and is capable of converting them to other usable levels.  Most line voltage regulators will have a shutdown feature.  It will sense any dangerous high or low voltages at which point it will shut down any outputs before any serious damage can occur.  With this feature, the output will remain turned off until the problem of over voltage or under voltage has been removed.  Normally there is an LED light that will indicate that the shut down is taking place.

One of the things you don't want to happen when using a line voltage regulator is voltage spikes or clicks that can leak into an audio application. To prevent this, make sure the line voltage regulator that you have automatically switches to a new tap electronically exactly at the zero crossing when voltage fluctuation occurs.  A quality line voltage regulator will also have power conditioning that will also protect any sensitive equipment from spikes as well as any audible high frequency noise.
