High Voltage Regulator
When speaking of a high voltage regulator, high voltage should first be discussed. The term high voltage is generally speaking of electrical circuits where the voltage that is being used can be the cause for safety concerns and insulation requirements.
There are many high voltage regulators on the market today and they are all called different names. One high voltage regulator is the electromechanical regulator. They have been known to be used to regulate the voltage on AC power distribution lines. This type of high voltage regulator operates by selecting the appropriate tap that is on a transformer that has multiple taps. If the line output is too low, then the tap changer switches the connections to be able to produce a higher voltage. If the output voltage is too high, then the tap changer will switch the connections to make it a lower voltage. A high voltage regulator will provide an output sooner than a mechanical voltage regulator and also at a much lower rpm. Another high voltage regulator is called the switching regulator. This type of high voltage regulator is used when power efficiency is critical, possibly as in a portable computer application. Switching regulators are used when the power supply is DC voltage and a much higher output voltage is required. They are capable of generating output voltages that are higher than the input voltages, or of opposite polarity. The switching high voltage regulator will rapidly switch a series device on and off. The charge that is being transferred to the load is determined by the duty cycle of the switch sets. It is also controlled by a feedback mechanism. The efficiency seen in the switching regulator is because the series element is either conducting fully or it is switched off as it dissipates almost no power. A
