Generator Voltage Regulator
Many want to know exactly what a generator voltage regulator is and how it works. Well a generator voltage regulator is simply a generator that works together with a voltage regulator. How Does the Generator Voltage Regulator Work?
How the Generator Works With A Voltage Regulator This will explain how the generator voltage regulator term came to be. The brushless generator will consist of an armature. This armature will spin and is often connected to the flywheel and the stator. The stator does not spin. When an engine starts, the armature will spin and the residual magnetism in the armature will induce some small voltage into the output windings of the stator. This is generally only a little over 10 volts. Then this voltage is converted to DC current by the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator is connected to the second set of windings of the stator. We call these the exciter windings. An electro magnet is formed with the DC current that is in these exciter windings. This will induce an AC current in the exciter windings of the stator that will match the DC current in the armature. The armature exciting windings are connected to rotating rectifiers. They in turn will convert the AC current into DC current. The output current (which is DC current) of the rotating rectifiers is going to be connected to the main windings of the armature. This DC current will create an electro magnet in the armature. This electro magnet will induce a much larger voltage into the output windings of the stator. The generator voltage regulator (which we call this) will use this increased voltage to generate more DC current. Basically, this cycle will continue until the generator reaches full operating voltage. At which point, the generator voltage regulator will reduce the amount of DC current that it is producing, which means that the output voltage of the generator is now lowered. Now that the
generator voltage regulator has been explained, one might ask, where can
