DC Voltage Regulator

To find out what a DC voltage regulator is, you should first know what DC is.  When discussing a DC voltage regulator, DC is  the unidirectional flow of electric charge.    DC stands for direct current.  The electric  charges in a DC voltage regulator will flow in a constant direction.  This distinguishes it from AC current.  Some forms of DC that are produced by a DC voltage regulator have very little variations in voltage but can still have variations in the output power and the current.

When discussing electrical engineering, DC is the term that is used to refer to power systems the utilize only one polarity of voltage or current.  The voltage that comes across a DC voltage source is going to be constant as the current is that comes through a DC current source.

The DC voltage regulator is basically a device that is used for switching control that will reduce the input DC voltage.  DC voltage regulators are also called DC converters.  The DC voltage regulator will provide stable output voltages that are regulated to supply electronic circuits.

There are several series of DC voltage regulators available.  Some of the DC voltage regulators dissipate a lot of heat.  Which means the higher the input voltage, more heat is generated.  When the input energy is converted to heat, it will keep the output voltage regulated at around 5 volts.  DC voltage regulators are also available to regulate voltages like 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 24 volts.  You can also find a DC voltage regulator that will adjust the voltages and also DC voltage regulators to use when you have a negative voltage supply.  These types of DC voltage regulators will support a maximum of 1A current rating.  There are some models of DC voltage regulators that require the input voltage to be higher than the output voltage.  For instance, the input voltage needs to be at least 7 volts in order to regulate an output voltage of 5 volts.  Another type of DC voltage regulator would be the switching mode power supply.  The control results in a much better regulated output as less energy is wasted through heat and can be used for high current applications.
