AC Voltage Regulator
The AC voltage regulator was designed to control the AC power coming into your electrical lines. The AC voltage regulator is much like a regular voltage regulator except it is geared to work with AC power. The AC voltage regulator takes the varying AC input voltage and will then produce a constant regulated AC output voltage. What is AC Power?
Types of AC Voltage RegulatorsThere are various types of AC voltage regulators on the market today. One type is the electromechanical voltage regulator. This type of AC voltage regulator is used to regulate the voltage on any AC power distribution lines. They operate by selecting an appropriate tap on a transformer which has multiple taps. When the output voltage is too low, the tap changer will switch the connections to produce a much higher voltage. The AC voltage regulator can also reverse this situation, whereas, if the voltage is to high, it will switch the connection to produce a much lower voltage. The AC voltage regulator of this type will usually have what we call a deadband. This means that the controller will be prevented from constantly adjusting the voltage to reach a desired target voltage. Another type of AC voltage regulator is the switching AC regulator. It will provide a precise ac output voltage without the need of any protective circuitry. It switches between two alternative operating modes. A transformer is set up with a first winding that is connected between the input terminal and the output terminal. A second winding is connected between one end of the first winding and the control terminal. There is a special switch assembly on this type of AC voltage regulator that has four separate circuits. Each of these circuits will have a series of connected transistors and diodes. They are controllably switched and the second winding is alternatively shorted or what we call excited. This provides a stepped up or stepped down voltage that comes out of the first winding. These transistors on this type of AC voltage regulator are controllably switched at a frequency that is greater than the AC input signal and also at the duty cycle that is selected which will provide the desired AC output voltage. Again, there are many type of AC voltage regulators that are available on the market today, however, TEMCo has a great line of reliable and quality made AC voltage regulators.
